PASSPORT TIPS FOR 2026
PASSPORT TIPS FOR 2026
Getting or renewing a U.S. passport in 2026 requires careful preparation to avoid delays. I used Travel.State.Gov to renew my passport. I elected to expedite my renewal by mail, paid the $60 fee, and received my Passport 2 weeks after it was received by the U.S. Department of State.
Here’s the information from my internet research:
Follow these essential tips for a smooth application process.
- Choose the Right Application Method
- Online Renewal: As of 2025/2026, eligible adults (age 25+) can renew their 10-year passports online via https://travel.state.gov/content/travel.html. This is the fastest method and eliminates the need to mail physical documents.
- Renewal by Mail (Form DS-82): Use this if your passport was issued within the last 15 years and you were at least 16 when it was issued. You must mail your most recent passport with the application.
- First-Time or In-Person (Form DS-11): If your passport was lost, stolen, or damaged, or if you are applying for the first time, you must apply in person at a Passport Acceptance Facility.
- Prepare Your Documents and Photo
- The “Six-Month Rule”: Many countries require your passport to be valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates. The State Department recommends renewing 9 to 12 months before expiration.
- Photo Precision: Do not wear glasses, uniforms, or camouflage in your photo. Use a white background and avoid “selfies”.
- Single-Sided Printing: If applying by mail or in person, print all forms on single-sided paper. Double-sided forms are often rejected.
- Trackable Mailing: If renewing by mail, use a trackable delivery method like USPS Priority Mail. Do not use UPS, FedEx, or DHL for P.O. Box addresses.
- Manage Fees and Timing
- Payment Methods: For mail-in applications, use a personal check or money order payable to “U.S. Department of State.” Write your full name and date of birth in the memo section. In-person facilities may accept different methods for their separate “execution fee”.
- Expedited Service: If traveling soon, pay the additional $60 fee for expedited processing. For travel in less than 2–3 weeks, you must schedule an Urgent Travel Appointment at a passport agency.
- Current Processing Times: Standard processing is approximately 6–8 weeks, but it can take up to 2 weeks for applications to arrive and another 2 weeks for the new passport to be delivered after printing.
- Final Checks
- Large Book Option: If you travel frequently, check the “Large Book” box on your form to receive 52 pages instead of the standard 28 at no extra cost.
- Status Updates: Sign up for email updates at Travel.State.Gov to track your application as it moves through the system.
- Trusted Traveler Update: After receiving your new passport, remember to update your Global Entry or TSA PreCheck profile with the new passport number.
